Where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday that the Best Fleets to Drive For program, which is dedicated to finding the industry’s top fleets took off. With the program entering its 12thyear, we thought we’d reflect on how the program came together and why it is important.

The Best Fleets to Drive For program is still the first and only award program of its kind to discover industry-leaders. Drivers will nominate their fleet , and after a series of questionnaires, interviews and driver surveys, the Best Fleets committee will determine the Best Fleets.

Interestingly enough, the master minds behind the program, Mark Murrell and Jane Jazrawy, came up with the idea after spending years working in the tech industry. In the tech industry, programs were developed to identify the best tech companies to work for. And, these programs proved to be especially helpful for companies looking to recruit highly qualified candidates during the “tech boom.”

After Mark and Jane found a niche in the trucking industry, founding CarriersEdge, a provider of online driver training in 2005, the two realized the trucking industry needed a platform to showcase the industries best fleets. In an industry that has long struggled to solve driver retention and recruiting issues, there was a need to highlight who the best fleets to drive for are and what makes them a good company. And, share what is “working” so that companies can take a look at their practices and identify areas where they can improve.

That was 12 years ago, and Best Fleets has since blossomed into a widely popular and well-regarded program in the industry. Record-setting nominations were entered last year, and that number will likely be surpassed this time around. Fleets that are deemed a Top 20 Best Fleet take pride in the accomplishment – some fleets even promote the feat on their trucks.

The Best Fleets program continues to push fleets to continue to strive to be their best and improve their practices. Recruiting and retaining quality drivers is tough, but the Best Fleets are figuring out ways to become more driver-friendly and focused.
